What Our Students Say

Frequently Asked
Questions

Expert insights and essential guidance on completing your online VDU DSE training course for Irish employers.

HSA Guidance

According to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Regulations, a "Competent Person" must have sufficient training, experience, and knowledge. Our Level 1 and 2 VDU DSE training courses are designed to meet this exact criteria.

Liability Protection: Trained internal assessors help mitigate insurance risks associated with Musculoskeletal (MSK) claims.

Yes. The Health & Safety Authority (HSA) requires that VDU assessments are carried out for all computer users. This is strictly outlined in the Safety Health and Welfare (General Application) Regulations 2007: Chapter 5 of Part 2. Undertaking an online VDU DSE training course ensures you have the knowledge and skills necessary for the legal assessment of Display Screen Equipment in the workplace.
Upon successful completion of the online VDU DSE training course with KOS Training Academy, you will be certified as competent to complete a Risk Assessment of a person’s workstation in accordance with the 2007 General Application Regulations. You will be able to advise on correct setups and impart the knowledge required for users to work safely. Note: The learner will not be certified as being competent to train other personnel as DSE/VDU assessors.
The course is delivered entirely online. It is a 1-day course running from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The methodology is highly interactive—presented in a modular format that includes problem-based learning and practical exercises. At the end of the day, there is a final exam to validate your competency.
This online VDU DSE training course is ideal for a wide range of professionals, including:
  • Employers & self-employed persons
  • Health & Safety managers or consultants
  • Health & Safety representatives
  • Occupational health professionals
  • Architects and IT professionals
  • Persons interested in workplace ergonomics
The aim of this VDU Assessor course is to provide delegates with the knowledge to correctly set up workstations and assist in formulating company policy on safe work practices. Course content includes:
  • Legal requirements under current Health & Safety legislation
  • Hazards & risks associated with DSE/VDU usage
  • Ergonomics of computer workstations
  • Practical control measures and environmental factors
  • Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders associated with usage
  • How to carry out a practical workstation assessment with an end-user
Yes. KOS Training Academy provides a complete training pack. To support the learner practically in their workplace, a comprehensive DSE/VDU template will be provided to each attendee to use during their actual assessments.
Yes. Participants who successfully complete the online course and the end-of-day exam will be issued with a KOS Training Academy certificate, which is recognized by the HSA to prove you are a competent person.
Level 1 (Basic DSE Assessor) is designed for beginners. It provides the essential foundation needed to start conducting standard assessments.

Level 2 (Advanced & Refresher) is for existing assessors. After 3 years, you must complete the Level 2 VDU DSE training course to refresh your certificate and remain compliant. This advanced course also dives deeper into complex cases, medically-graded equipment selection, and advanced postural analysis.
Technically, they refer to the same thing. VDU (Visual Display Unit) is the older term, while DSE (Display Screen Equipment) is the modern terminology used by the HSA. Our VDU DSE training course covers both terminologies to ensure full regulatory alignment.
The Level 2 Post-Foundation course content includes:
  • Review of the Irish regulations relating to VDU/DSE usage
  • Review of anatomy and physiology relating to the body when using VDU / DSE Workstations
  • Discussion and review on how the most common injuries for office based workers can be caused due to the work environment
  • How these can be significantly reduced in the office by creating an ergonomic environment
  • Review of 'best practice' when discussing working postures and the need for flexibility, not just application of strict 'rules', including discussing individual cases
  • Practical review of workstation set up
  • Practical review of 'ergonomic' equipment, discussing when to use and why
  • Review of "best practice" on performing the assessment and seeing the whole process through
  • Discussion of return to work scenarios
The Level 1 VDU/DSE Assessment Training Course covers:
  • Ergonomics and Anthropometrics
  • Legal requirements under current Health & Safety legislation (Irish and European)
  • Hazards & Risks associated with VDU / DSE usage
  • Ergonomics of computer workstations
  • Environmental factors
  • Recent studies and legal cases relevant to VDUs / DSEs
  • Emerging issues around hot-desking, sit-stand desks, home working and laptop and tablet use
  • Assessment techniques and evaluation
No, these courses allow you to carry out in-person DSE assessments only. We run a separate remote DSE assessor course; please ask to be added to the waitlist for this course by emailing us below for individuals or enquire about group training.
