Essential guidance on VDU compliance and Assessor certification for Irish employers.

HSA Guidance

According to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Regulations, a "Competent Person" must have sufficient training, experience, and knowledge. Our Level 1 and 2 courses are designed to meet this exact criteria for 2026 standards.

Liability Protection: Trained assessors help mitigate insurance risks associated with MSK claims.

Who are these training courses for?
Our courses are designed for a wide range of professionals and organizations:
  • Companies & Departments: Organizations looking to train internal assessors across any department (HR, Facilities, Operations, or H&S) to manage compliance in-house.
  • Departments Upskilling: Specifically tailored for Health and Safety, Human Resources, and Facilities teams.
  • Individual Specialists: Individuals looking to upskill, including Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, and Occupational Health & Safety personnel.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?

The main difference lies in experience and depth of study:

  • Level 1 (Beginner): Aimed at those new to ergonomics or starting their journey as an assessor.
  • Level 2 (Advanced / Refresher): A specialist course for experienced assessors. Requirement: You must have carried out 25+ assessments to be considered. This is also an ideal refresher course if you haven't carried out assessments in a while.
Is VDU Assessor Training a legal requirement?
Yes. Under Chapter 5 of Part 2 of the 2007 General Application Regulations, employers must ensure that every employee's workstation is assessed by a competent person. Training your own staff is the most efficient way to maintain this compliance.
What is the difference between VDU and DSE?
Technically, they refer to the same thing. **VDU** (Visual Display Unit) is the older term, while **DSE** (Display Screen Equipment) is the modern terminology used by the HSA. Our training covers both to ensure full regulatory alignment.
Does the training cover Home/Remote workers?
Absolutely. The 2026 DSE standards require home-office assessments to be as rigorous as those in the office. Our courses include specific modules on virtual assessment techniques and hybrid-work ergonomics.
Do we get a certificate upon completion?
Yes. All successful participants receive a KOS Ergonomic Academy Certificate. This serves as documented proof for HSA inspectors and insurance auditors that your staff are "Competent Persons."
How long is the Level 1 course?
Our Level 1 course is an intensive 1-day live virtual workshop. It is designed to be time-efficient while providing all the clinical and legal knowledge required to start performing assessments immediately.
Are training materials included?
Yes. Every attendee receives the **KOS Assessor Toolkit**, which includes professional audit templates, postural diagrams, and equipment checklists to use within their organization.
