HSA Competent Person Standard

Under Chapter 5, Part 2 of the General Application Regulations 2007, workstation risk assessments in Ireland must be carried out by a "Competent Person" with the training, experience and knowledge the assessment requires.

Risk Mitigation: Formal assessor training, backed by clear assessment records, helps employers show how they manage the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs).

What is a DSE training course, and is VDU training the same thing?

A DSE (Display Screen Equipment) training course trains and certifies individuals to carry out risk assessments on office and computer workstations. VDU (Visual Display Unit) training is simply the older term. Both refer to the same workstation safety standards and legal requirements under Irish health and safety legislation.

Is DSE / VDU workstation assessor training a legal requirement in Ireland?

Employers in Ireland are legally required to assess the workstations of employees who regularly use display screen equipment, under Chapter 5, Part 2 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007. These assessments must be carried out by a "Competent Person", either internal or external. The law doesn't name a specific course, but formal assessor training is the most common way employers give internal assessors the knowledge and skills the role needs, and show how they meet the standard.

How do I become a certified DSE workstation assessor in Ireland?

Start with an accredited training programme such as the KOS Level 1 DSE Assessor Course. When you complete the course and pass the practical assessment, you receive a CPD-approved certificate that records your training in carrying out workstation assessments and documenting compliance. Putting that training into practice on real assessments then builds the experience the role needs.

Can I complete the DSE training course online, or do you offer on-site group sessions?

Both options are available:

Online DSE Training: Live, interactive sessions delivered via Microsoft Teams by clinical physiotherapists and ergonomic specialists.
On-Site Group Training: Dedicated instructor-led training conducted directly at your corporate premises anywhere in Ireland.

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 DSE assessor courses?

Level 1 (Foundation): Designed for new assessors. Covers fundamental ergonomics, legal duties, standard equipment setup, and baseline risk assessments for office-based staff.
Level 2 (Advanced / Refresher): Designed for experienced assessors, or as a refresher (recommended every 3 years). Focuses on complex medical cases, pre-existing injuries, specialised equipment selection, and advanced postural analysis.

Does this course cover DSE assessments for remote and hybrid workers?

The DSE Regulations apply to employees wherever they work, so home and hybrid setups need to be assessed too. Level 1 covers assessments for office-based staff. To assess home workers, add our Remote & Hybrid Assessor Course, which covers remote assessment methods, working from photos and video, and advising home workers on posture and equipment. Level 1 is its prerequisite, and together the two courses cover hybrid staff who split their time between the office and home.

How long is the DSE assessor certificate valid, and when is recertification required?

Your KOS certificate is valid for 3 years. We recommend completing the Level 2 Advanced / Refresher course before it expires, so your skills, knowledge and records stay current with HSA guidance and changes in ergonomic equipment.

What is the difference between general DSE awareness and DSE assessor training?

DSE Awareness Training is a short course for general employees on setting up their own desk and posture. DSE Assessor Training is a comprehensive qualification for designated staff who will carry out and document workstation assessments for other employees.

Are assessment templates and auditing tools included with the course?

Yes. All participants receive a complete Assessor Toolkit, including risk assessment templates aligned with HSA guidance, ergonomic inspection checklists, and reference materials, so you can begin carrying out assessments after certification.
