Helpful Hints to prevent RSI

Constant and repetitive use of the computer mouse can cause Repetiive Strain Injuries (RSI) pain in the hand, wrist and arms.  8 out of 10 people feel they cannot reduce the amount of time in front of the computer.

Here are a few things you could look at.

Look at your work habits and try to see where you can take short breaks.

In a recent survey 33% of participants reported that the computer mouse and its location are the primary causes of pain or discomfort caused by computer work.

Look at the location where you use the mouse and its location when you experience pain or discomfort.·Working with your mouse as near to you as possible will help minimise unnecessary movements.

Listen to your body and its signals – take action promptly.

Most of those who experience mouse-related pain or discomfort suffer for weeks or months. 29% experienced pain for more than a full year.

Among those who have experienced RSI and mouse related pain and discomfort, nearly half have taken sick leave. Others have had to work slower, reduce their hours or decline to work certain tasks.

Assess whether new equipment can reduce sick leave and increase efficiency.· Examine the need of everyone using a computer mouse.

Check your Mouse Placement

Be mindful of how you use your mouse.  Avoid flexing your wrist to the right when holding your mouse.  Constantly flexing your wrist like this can result in RSI.

An ergonomic mouse changes the way you physically use the mouse. It will help reduce the strain on the hand arms and wrist.·

Reduce unnecessary movements like stretching for a mouse.

Avoid flexing your wrist upwards when using your keyboard.  This puts unnecessary pressure on your wrist and tendons.

Consulting with a physiotherapist or occupational health professional early and then acting on there advice will lead to a measureable improvement.

Be proactive rather than reactive to a RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) problem.·

Prevention of RSI is always better than cure.
