As business’s react to the global pandemonium that is Covid-19, it appears homeworking will become commonplace for the foreseeable future. Although tricky to get right, homeworking doesn’t have to negatively affect your productivity and performance.

So how can you set yourself up for success? What can you do to stay focused and productive? And how do you keep your work life separate from your home life?

Take these practical steps to make the transition to homeworking seamless.

1)     Get up and dressed as normal

Although tempting, lounging around in your dressing gown ‘for the morning’ is a slippery slope you want to avoid. Get dressed in the morning as though you are going to the actual office.

It doesn’t have to be super formal but get ready as if a colleague may call over at any stage. This is especially relevant for those using video conferencing software.

2)     Have a dedicated workspace

In order to avoid distractions ideally work in a dedicated office space where you can close the door and get down to business.

Separating tasks and rooms is vital in maintaining focus and avoiding temptations that will deter productivity.

3)     Set yourself up at your workstation

Be sure to use the right equipment. An ergonomic chair, a desk, a laptop stand with a separate keyboard and mouse will all have a big impact on how your back feels at the end of the day.

You’ll soon find out that the dining room table and chair just won’t cut it. Ensure all equipment is set up correctly to avoid any discomfort arising.

4)     Take regular breaks

It may be tempting to work consistently, especially if you’re worries people may think you’re slacking as you’re new but it’s vital to regular breaks. How often is best you say?

Researchers at a social media company recently tracked the habits of their most productive employees. They discovered that the best workers typically worked intently for around 52 minutes and then took a 17-minute break.

5)     Exercise

Build time in your schedule to exercise at home, go for a walk or to the gym at some stage during your day. It improves your well-being, improves focus and provides a change to your surroundings.

It may also be an opportunity to socialise with other homeworkers also. It’s hard to replace the social aspect of a busy office but some attempt needs to be made!
